Founders Day. UMBC at 50: Reflections and Aspirations. Tekes never just sit back and rest on their laurels. After all, without it, we would not be where we are today. Through the leadership of our skilled Chief Executive Officer, Donald Aldrich, our dedicated Professional Staff and critical volunteers, we weathered the pandemic and emerged with a stronger organization. We have been recognized by national media for excellence. Founders Day provides us the opportunity to reflect briefly on our university's history, to highlight important recent accomplishments, and to describe some of our vision for its future. o How can we provide experiential learning and greater cultural and global competence for all students? These milestones are points of pride, but also events that we should think about deeply as we consider our own contributions to Wake Forest today. As we look forward to the future of Tau Kappa Epsilon and fraternities as a whole, the expectations of todays society are much higher than ever before. We are forward-looking and responsive. o Many of our studentsincluding those in the Humanities Scholars Programspend at least a semester in study abroad. We have come too far to falter. WebAs we celebrate the Foundation Day of our company, we thank all our customers for always believing in us and our company. For example, our Humanities and Social Sciences Forums explore key issues in our society. And the case for putting that campus in the Baltimore region was growing as well. Let me give a few examples. o We have partnerships with generous philanthropists and such foundations as Gates, HHMI, Sloan, and Mellon that have made a critical contribution to our efforts to improve student success. All our administrative work was done via paper, and even the most basic level of data analysis was difficult and time consuming. At the same time, the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown v Board of Education of Topeka and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964again under Johnsonhelped ensure that the expansion of access could be inclusive, extending beyond just whites to African Americans and other minorities. What inspired these men to our fraternal table? America is failing these lower-income students; we must continue to elevate not just college readiness but the work we do on campuses to ensure these students succeed when they get here. In reflecting on these newest members, I wonder. Id like to share a story of a chance encounter I had while travelling home from a Grand Council meeting this past fall semester. Our campus has become a leader in cybersecuritya key tool for our nations securitywith work ranging from information technology to ethics. Albin O. In so many ways, we've done just that. They didnt want the necessity of distraction and controversy that often accompanies the march of justice. We had a nice discussion that continued while we waited for our bags after the conclusion of the flight. As a number of men might not know our mission, I can testify to its enduring strength as we "aid men in their mental, moral and social development". We are addressing health disparities in work ranging from biomedical research on diseases that affect underserved populations, to statistical modeling in public policy to understand the causes of persistent differences in health status among disadvantaged populations such as African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians, and to identify interventions to close the gaps. We are a university on the move. Founder We have the possibility of running for the Grand Council and charting the path of the Grand Chapter. Better Men for a Better World is a commitment we make each and every day to each other and our beloved Fraternity. But we are also an institution constantly looking for ways to expand the narrative. Most of all, we believe in hard, sustained work for student success. While many see Better Men for a Better World as simply a tagline, I see it through the many I have met in my travels who were enriched by the TKE experience. They called themselves the Knights of Classic Lore. The Grand Council, which typically convenes three or four times a year, met more frequently. Being a TKE for Life means acting on our values to make a better life for you and those around you. While they believed college was not for everyone and you didnt need book smarts to survive in the world, college was for their son. Can you become a chapter volunteer? The current pandemic presents a challenge to the future of Tau Kappa Epsilon, conceivably in ways we have not seen since World War II. Social injustice continues. Most people today are surprised when they learn that in 1940, on the brink of World War II, just 5% of whites and only 1% of blacks in America had earned a college degree. This past semester, I had the honor of attending initiation at UCF and leading the Bond reading to the new Fraters. We had two incompatible networks and two email systems that made it difficult to communicate between academic and administrative staff. Knowing full well that the mission of college training is to develop such traits, we were fully convinced that in the end-developing character, enriched life and enlarged personality-would justify any risk that might be taken in selecting such a man. Its not another thing written on paper. And, at the same time, we have become more international, both in our student body and faculty and in our teaching, research, and engagement. With more than $80 million in training and research grants, UMBC has solidified its place among our nations research universities as Carnegie has classified our institution as a Doctoral University with Higher Research activity. WebIt is my privilege and pleasure to welcome all of you here on the auspicious day of our school completing its 25 years and celebrating its Silver Jubilee function. However, this time it was a mom mentioning her son had just joined TKE at a school in Ohio. The State of Maryland and other sources have generously provided almost three-quarters of a billion dollars in developing and building state-of-the-art facilities for instruction, research, and student life for the 20-year period from 2000 to 2020. As our creed highlights: TKEs have always been a Brotherhood of gentlemen in perpetual quest of excellence as a way of life. The Grand Council and I look forward to continuing to support the philanthropic work of our Fraternity and expand our financial wellbeinga key pathway to a more secure future. This was the year that the Board of Trustees finally voted to admit African American students. In fact, announcing a goal of having more active alumni than any other college fraternity by January 10, 2024, the date of our 125th anniversary. We will continue to innovate in the classroom and on campus generally. This year, nursing major Brooke Zahine '24 was selected to present o Princeton Review named us a College that Pays You Back and Kiplingers named us a Best Value College for 2016. She is rightly part of our celebration today. Even though we were founded as an undergraduate organization, our fraternity lives long beyond the undergraduate years. The speech is a means of showing ones appreciation through words of praise and gratitude.
